OXNARD -- The conclusion of the 12th annual Oxnard girls water polo tournament saw rivalries renewed and some new ones formed, players arriving late and others unfortunately leaving early and featured sudden-death victories, impressive rallies and inspiring comebacks.
Three local teams left significant impressions Saturday at Oxnard High, with Newbury Park (14-9) benefiting from five goals in Elise Begg's return to the lineup after SAT testing earlier in the day to place third in the 26-team event with a 12-4 victory over Paso Robles.
Newbury Park lost to Rio Mesa 7-4 and defeated Temple City 11-6.
Oxnard won its second straight match in sudden-death overtime to capture the tournament title for the first time, outlasting Pacific View League rival Rio Mesa 7-6 in the final. The Yellowjackets (18-8) also defeated Paso Robles 6-5 in overtime in the semifinals.
Notre Dame and Eagle Rock squared off in an emotional battle for fifth place, with the Knights (14-7) prevailing 12-11.
