First Time Daddy: Learning to walk takes baby steps

Before I was a parent, I knew the basics. Babies don’t move very much, then they crawl, then not long after that they’re walking. They’re called toddlers because they toddle – they’re not good on their feet.

Hudson is a toddler now. He looks like I do when I put on Rollerblades or ice skates, like his legs have rubber for bones or he’s trying to stand on marbles. He falls a lot.

What is not in the nonparent Cliff Notes of parenthood, what you won’t know until you’re a parent is that learning to crawl and then to walk is extremely difficult and painful. Ask anyone who’s had a hip replaced. There’s a reason nature doesn’t let you remember it.

As I write this, he’s toddling across the room. He’s just fallen. There was a brief look of “Oh, no!” as he tipped over, but then he got back up again. Now he’s fallen again. His diaper pads him a little bit, but the whole process looks so frustrating. He doesn’t always land on his tush, either. Sometimes he goes forward and lands on his knees; the thing he tripped on – a book or a toy – often barks his shins.
