11-year-olds skate length of Lake Winnipesaukee

EXETER — Eleven-year-old boys Sam Eoll of Exeter and Nick Wyman of Portsmouth skated the length of Lake Winnipesaukee, from Center Harbor to Alton Bay — 30 miles — in 4.5 hours on Feb. 6.

It may have seemed like a nice day for most people in New Hampshire; the sun was bright, the wind was light and the temperature was a seasonable 16 degrees. But for this pair of 11-year-old hockey players, it was a day of adventure. The two players are teammates on the Seacoast Spartan 01Elites, playing out of The Rinks at Exeter, and Feb. 6 was the day to take the skate of a lifetime.

They laced up their skates on the shore of Center Harbor. They had their picture taken with the Mount Washington in the background, and then they looked southeast toward the far away shores of Alton Bay. Their goal was to skate the length of Lake Winnipesaukee, approximately 25-30 miles.

The boys and their guide started out of the harbor and had the pleasure of seeing ice fishermen drill their holes and ice boats slide across the ice. The ice was a little bumpy in the harbor, but out on the big lake it smoothed out and produced fine ice to stride across. They viewed the wonderful homes on the shores of Black Cat and Bear Islands. Mount Chocorua and Mount Washington also appeared in the distance.
