Nellie gets the nod

I was really happy to learn last week that Jim Nelford will be named to the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame this year. The announcement is expected in the next day or so.

Nellie is long overdue for this honour. He’s distinguished himself as a great amateur, tremendous professional and, after a horrifying motorboat accident, as a broadcaster. I’ve been lucky enough to work with him for many years on our TSN and CTV broadcasts and he is an exceptionally hard worker, always preparing, always looking for new information.

As a player, there aren’t too many who had a better amateur record than Nelford. He won the 1973 B.C. Junior and two years later beat Doug Roxburgh in a playoff for the provincial amateur crown.

He beat Roxburgh again in ’75 for the Canadian Amateur title, which he defended the next year by beating Rafael Alarcon in a playoff.

He won the Western Amateur and was the first Canadian to head down to Brigham Young University, where he was a second-team all-American twice. His appearance at that school started a trend of Canadians heading there including Rick Gibson, Richard Zokol, Brent Franklin and Mike Weir.
