A team of groundsmen worked over the Bank Holiday weekend to clear away the debris, but it is still not known when the course will reopen.

However, Gary said they were doing all that they could to ensure the course would be ready as soon as possible.

He said: “We’ve pumped as much as we can away, now it’s down to the weather.

“We can’t say yet when it will be able to open.”

A spokeswoman for Northumbrian Water said: “Heavy storm conditions put undue pressure on the system which caused flooding.

“At the same time there was a build up in local beck and a lot of water that spilt onto the course was river water and surface water.

“We employed contractors straight away and they have been cleaning and clearing the golf course.
