Killeen woman honors organ donor by cheering for West Va.
“My donor, Taitlyn, loved WVU,” said McPherson, who received a donated liver in 2011. “This is just a way I can continue thanking my organ donor for the gift of life.
“Taitlyn was just 12 years old (when she died). But she dreamed of changing the world. I know any time I can encourage anyone to register and be an organ donor, I’m keeping that dream alive.”
McPherson, 38, has made similar appearances at other West Virginia games in recent months. Most of the sporting events she has attended have been within driving distance of her Killeen home. But she also has attended a few home games in West Virginia.
The tradition started after McPherson went to West Virginia to visit the family of her donor, Taitlyn Hughes.
Her mother gave McPherson a bright gold WVU T-shirt that had been Taitlyn’s.
McPherson immediately recognized it as the shirt Taitlyn had on in a photo that was one of McPherson’s favorites of the girl. In the shot, the 12-year-old cheerleader is grinning with “WV” painted on her face.
