Second-ranked Spartanburg Methodist rallied from 15 points behind in the second half Thursday night to beat Clinton Junior College, 68-60, in Bridges Arena and improve to 25-0.
“We were in desperation mode,” SMC head coach Jeff Brookman said.
The Pioneers shot 18 percent (7-for-38) in the first half, had one field goal on their last 18 possessions, and were down, 35-20, at the break. They started the game 1-for-12, grabbing six offensive rebounds on two possessions without scoring.
“It was a scary feeling,” SMC sophomore Ronell Crockett said. “We didn’t want to lose. We got together and decided that if we were going to lose, it was going to be while we were going all-out on the floor.”
“We haven’t been down like that all season,” said Jalen Nesbitt, who led all scorers with 20 points. “We just had to man up and play hard. We couldn’t take any possessions off.”
Finally, SMC started to make its move. The Pioneers scored on three straight trips, two buckets by Crockett and a 3-pointer by Nesbitt to get within five. Nesbitt got a steal and a layup, and then converted a three-point play to give SMC its first lead, 44-43, with 9 minutes left.
